PhD Study Program
for Physicians in Various Professional Stages

Understanding the mechanisms of brain activity is probably the greatest scientific challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. How the brain processes information into a view of the world, how we learn and store information, what mechanisms generate and regulate emotions and desires, and how we are able to understand and use language – these are only a few of the questions explored in brain research. An understanding of these neural mechanisms can only be reached through interdisciplinary research combining Psychology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Biology, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

The Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University attaches great importance to nurturing the next generation of Neuroscience researchers. Scientific breakthroughs in this fascinating field have many implications for the area of medicine. The connection between the scientific and the medical worlds is essential, as scientific discoveries lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches, and findings from the clinical world feed insights and directions for scientific research in the field.

In order to encourage mutual enrichment between the two worlds and grow a generation of physician-scientists which revolutionizes the world of medicine, the Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University has developed a unique and prestigious PhD program in Neuroscience, designed for outstanding physicians at all professional stages. As part of the program, the physicians will hold basic or translational research in a Neuroscience field, while receiving a generous stipend. Following their thesis work, they will be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The goal of the program is to train the next generation of physician-researchers in Neuroscience, to enable them to acquire knowledge and develop innovative research tools for the application of groundbreaking scientific research in the area of Neuroscience.

Unique aspects of the Program at the Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University:

The Brain Research Center comprises more than 40 scientists and researchers studying the brain at all levels, from molecules involved in neural transmission and individual neurons, through information processing in neural networks, to the study of cognition, behavior and human consciousness. Most of the laboratories at the center combine basic research with translational clinical implications, such as: Labs for studying Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, OCD, artificial vision for the blind, and more. Our laboratories are equipped with advanced scientific equipment and use various scientific tools such as molecular methods, electrophysiological recordings, brain stimulation, mathematical models and computations, brain imaging, and cognitive and behavioral methods.

What sets the PhD program apart is a special focus on Neuroscience from a multidisciplinary and computational perspective using Machine Learning. The program is relevant for physicians interested in a variety of specialties, including Neurology, Anaesthesia, Pediatric Neurology, Geriatric And Rehabilitation Neurology, Psychiatry, Epileptology, and Ophthalmology. The physicians studying in the program will conduct in-depth research on an area in which they have specialized or wish to specialize in the future, and will study its basic, translational, or clinical aspects. This will be performed while acquiring tools and skills for independent scientific research which creates a direct link to the international scientific community in the field.

The program provides skills and tools to establish a research group in the medical field, supports professional advancement through breakthrough scientific research, and creates a true contribution to the development of an advanced scientific environment in medical centers – while developing new and effective treatments for patients.
